Lawmaker calls for temporary opening of land border

Lawan Hamidu, Abuja.

A Nigerian House of Representatives’ member from Jigawa State has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to temporarily open the country’s border to prevent goods already at the border from wastages and loss.

Alhaji Muhammad Gudaji Kazaure in a chat with National Assembly Correspondents said some of the importers took loan from Banks to carry out their businesses and the goods should not be allowed to get wasted.

While reiterating the National Assembly’s resolve to partner with the Executive Arm said people should be enlightened on policy like border closure, to avoid subjecting them to avoidable hardship.

The lawmaker explained that “I was at Kongolan and Jibia borders, I want to appeal to the Federal Government to consider reopening the land borders temporarily to allow goods that are trapped at the borders who were caught unaware with the sudden closure.”

The lawmaker also revealed that he was planning a motion this week, to advocate for a drastic reduction of the budget of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

He criticised the 1.3 trillion Naira budget of the CBN for the 2020 fiscal year, describing it as outrageous.

Alh. Kazaure said “In 2019 the budget of the CBN was 420 billion naira, but suddenly proposed 1.3 trillion naira budget for the 2020 fiscal year.

The propose sum of 1.3 trillion naira is outrageous for an agency that is not generating any revenue for government.

The funds to be cut should be allocated to health, education and the federal government’s N-Power social intervention programme.”

The lawmaker also slammed the CBN for disregarding the resolution of the House that called for the suspension of the one percent charge on deposits over 500# and other withdrawal charges by commercial banks.

Last month, the lawmakers asked the CBN to stop the deduction on deposit policy, as it will discourage Nigerians from using banks, while increasing the risk of keeping cash at home.
