Media serves as tool for development

Senator Gemade said the media is required to be agent and catalyst of peace and development.

Mass media play a critical role in the nation’s development and goes beyond information dissemination and being seen as strong instrument for effective change in attitude, values and perception.

Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed made the assertion while receiving the delegation, International Press Institute (IPI), World Congress Committee led by Former Director-General of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Dr. Tonnie Iredia at the government house, Ilorin on Monday.

Free media
Governor Ahmed, therefore, expressed support for constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press and freedom of speech.

The Governor stated that a free media ensures that citizens are well informed while stimulating lively debates about government programmes which can then serve as valuable feedback for good governance.

Furthermore, the governor urged the media and the IPI to strengthen its surveillance, agenda-setting and information functions at this critical time in the country’s history.

The leader of the IPI delegation, Dr Tonnie Iredia disclosed that the team was at the State on a sensitization tour on the institute’s forthcoming world congress, with the theme:” Why Journalism Matters; Quality Media for Strong Societies”.
