Minister urges teachers to adopt digital literacy

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba has called on Teachers in basic and post basic levels of Education to take advantage of digital literacy to improve their teaching skills.

Nwajiuba also said teaching has moved from Literacy and numeracy to digital understanding.

The Minister said these during the flag off ceremony of a 5-day digital literacy training organised by Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria for Teachers in basic and post basic levels of Education.

He added that digital literacy will provide teachers the ability to adapt and manipulate technological devices for effective use.

According to him, “digital literacy gives education that empowers teachers to provide necessary knowledge and skill that equips them to survive” 

This is an opportunity in a lifetime which teachers must utilise efficiently because teaching has moved from Literacy and numeracy to include digital understanding, it provides ability to adapt and manipulate technological devices,” he added.

He noted that the TRCN has deploy fully digital literacy for the conduct of it’s teachers professional examinations.

Nwajiuba emphasised that the laptops will be given out to the TRCN registered teachers at subsidised rate.

Responding to demands of provision of computer system for teachers in training after the programme, the Minister said the federal government was making arrangements to procure laptops for all registered teachers with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to further enhance their productivity.

He added that the leadership of the ministry of education is presently in talks with internet service providers to also make available internet services for teachers in specific areas.

According to the Minister, “the federal government is making arrangements to give all Nigerian teachers who are registered with TRCN one laptop each, but the teachers are going to pay for it at subsidised rate, we are making arrangements whereby the teachers will pay installmentaly.”

“The government is also working with service providers to provide internet facilities to Nigeria teachers in support of their laptop to make our teachers digitally literate,” he added.

The training involves programmes on computer fundamentals, key application and online appreciation.
