The Kano State Command of the anti-narcotic agency in Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, says it intercepted and seized over 8 tons of various illicit drugs as well as arrested 906 suspects in the year 2019.

It said number of arrests year on year in the state is on the decline because of sustained drug demand reduction activities of the agency.

The state Commander, Ibrahim Abdul stated this during the agency’s annual press briefing, held in Kano state north western Nigeria.

He said items seized in the year under review includes:  4,525.47kg of Cannabis sativa, Psychotropic 2,927.669kg, Cocaine 3.455kg,  Khat 250.0000kg and  heroine 000.167kg,  while other drugs were 160.900kg amounting to 8,031,207kg.

“The command in the course of the year succeeded in arresting two suspects with 2.927kg of cocaine, the first time the hard drug of that magnitude was intercepted in the state.”

“The command also destroyed two cannabis sativa plantations at Wailari village in Kumbotso Local Government and Kiru Local Government areas of the state. “

“A syndicate of Barons dealing in psychotropic substances was arrested by our strike-force team, including Codeine syrup weighing 53.6kg was seized,” said Abdul

He said the agency arrested six suspects connected with the Zainab Aliyu’s saga, saying “the command played a significant role in unearthing and arresting the suspects and the lady was saved from execution in Saudi Arabia for allegedly importing tramadol.”

Abdul explained that 103 females and 803 males were among the 906 suspects arrested.

“The statistics represent a sharp decline in the number of arrest and seizure, which may not be unconnected with the sustained interdiction operation and drug demand reduction activities,” the commander said.

He said in the year under review the command secured 107 convictions including 1 female while 76 cases were pending.

He commended the logistics and financial support given by the state government through the traditional institution, which played a vital role in complementing the agency’s effort in addressing the menace of drug abuse and trafficking in the state.

He said the cordial inter agency relationship among security operatives in the state also played a pivotal role in the illicit drug fight.
