The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has told Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, that the Nigeria Football Federation is responsible for his contract renewal.
He said this at a brief meeting with Rohr on Wednesday in Abuja
Though Rohr’s contract expires in June 2020, there have been controversies over the possibility of NFF not renewing the contract.
As a condition to renew Rohr’s contract, the NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, said the coach must be domiciled in Nigeria and monitor domestic leagues.
Dare, however, gave a hint that the NFF was finalising arrangement to renew Rohr’s contract.
He said, “The issue of contract (with Rohr) will be best handled by the NFF, I understand the need to work the fine lines.
“I understand there is a contractual arrangement with the NFF; I will allow the NFF to work through its process.”
“The minister is comfortable with Rohr’s performance. The NFF officials also know this. I don’t see them not renewing his (Rohr) contract, but you know the minister cannot impose a coach on them,”
The sports minister urged the Franco-German coach not to be distracted by the controversy surrounding his contract, adding that he should accept the conditions given by NFF for his contract to be renewed.
Rohr pledged to work closely with the minister as the Eagles strive to pick the AFCON 2021 ticket.
The high point of the event was the presentation of an autographed Eagles jersey by the coach to the minister.
Dare said, “Are we happy about where our football is at the moment? Not exactly, but we know there’s an ongoing process that will make this country a better football nation. That process is on and you are part of the process.
“More importantly your knowledge and support for the domestic league will be very important because you can share your experience with our local coaches.”
