The organized Labour unions in the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Association of Senior Civil Servants, and the Medical and Health Workers Union, NHIS chapter have said that the reinstatement of its suspended Executive Secretary, Professor Usman Yusuf would bring about industrial disharmony in the orgnisation.

They were talking at a peaceful protest held at the headquarters of the NHIS, in Abuja.

The chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants in NHIS, Mr. Rasaq Omomeji, said that following the corruption charges against the Executive Secretary, bringing him back to office is not the right thing to do.

He said that Professor Yusuf should be allowed to answer to his charges from outside.

“The man has a case in court. He should be allowed to answer to his charges, We are urging Mr. President to revisit this case and since we know that the case of Prof. Yusuf is still being investigated by the EFCC, the president should wait for the outcome of the investigation. If he is not found guilty, then he can be reinstated. Because we know that he who must come to equity must come with clean hands,” he said.

Mr. Omomeji also noted that there was need to carry out the anti-corruption crusade campaign in Nigerian irrespective of tribe or part affiliations.

Similarly, the chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Mr. Kayode Olawuyi, said that the allegations against the Executive Secretary is enormous and should not be swept under the carpet.

He called on the president to reverse the reinstatement.

“ We demand, we urge the Presidency, the federal government  to revert the reinstatement of Prof. Yusuf. If they want to have peace and tranquility and industrial harmony in the NHIS. We have not in the history of NHIS created any problem. The reason is that we are law abiding and we all play by the rule. Buy from all indication, the reinstatement of Prof. Yusuf will cause chaos in the scheme, which we do not want to go into. And to ensure industrial harmony, fairness and justice and true fight against corruption, They should allow the man to go and sort himself out with ant corruption agencies before resuming here. If they want us to assist them, we can jointly assist too. That is our stand” Mr. Olawuyi said.

The unions said that the National Insurance Scheme boss, Professor Usman Yusuf who was suspended in July 2017 following allegations of corruption and being investigated by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission was reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari, without following due process.

The government has however said that the reinstatement of Professor Yusuf would not affect his investigation.
