Niger state constructs 1km drainage, culverts to avert flooding

Agwara Local Government Council in Niger has said that it has started the construction of 1km drainage and five culverts to prevent flooding and erosion at Sabon Papiri ward of the council.

Alhaji Nura Kokoli, the council chairman who disclosed this during an interview in Agwara said that the project would gulp N1million through direct labour by the Council’s Works department.

The council decided to construct the drainage and culverts to allow free flow of water in the area.

“The idea is to avoid the risk of gully erosion and to save many houses from being washed away by water,” he said.

Kokoli said that the job would be done through direct labour by the works department of the council.

He urged the works department to do a good job and ensure its early completion, adding that already heavy duty equipment have been moved to the site.

The Council Chairman appealed to the people of the area to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the gutter to prevent blockage.

He warned that anyone caught in such act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
