The Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS says Nigeria is the most important country in West Africa.
New President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Kassi Brou made the statement in Abuja , while speaking to Journalists after a meeting President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Brou, who appreciated Nigeria’s enormous contribution to the organization, told State House Correspondents that he assumed duties in Abuja .
“Well yesterday I took charge and I decided to come and visit President Muhammadu Buhari and to thank him for the support he has continuously given to ECOWAS. You know Nigeria is the host country of ECOWAS and Nigeria is the most important country of ECOWAS, so it is important we come and thank him. It is also important we come and inform him of some of the key issues facing ECOWAS; we have several activities, programme and challenges. It was an opportunity to really seek President Buhari’s guidance, advice and how best we can advance the agenda of integration in West Africa,” he said.
Listing some of the challenges confronting ECOWAS, Mr Brou said: “Issues of stability, peace, economic integration, common market, single currency, you know there was a fenced meeting of Heads of State in Accra, Ghana, the task force working on this issue. The issue of agriculture consumers, we have several issues and of course we will continue to work together to improve on these key issues.”
The ECOWAS Commission President told Journalists that President Buhari pledged more support for the regional body.
“He is fully committed to promoting regional integration agenda and given his leadership in ECOWAS, he has promised to continue his support so that progress can be made for the benefits of all population of the 15 member country of ECOWAS,” Mr Brou stated.
