Comrade Emmanuel Okechukwu Ugboaja has been appointed the new General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC.

He was appointed during a meeting of the Central Working Committee of the NLC and takes over from former General Secretary, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson.

Comrade Ugboaja, a Law graduate of the University of Calabar, was born on the 15th May 1966.

After four years of private practice, Ugboaja in 1993 joined the National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non Metallic Products Employees, an affiliate of Nigeria Labour Congress where he rose to serve as General Secretary from 2000 to 2005.

He became Coordinator Advocacy and Mobilisation of Alliance for Credible Elections in 2006 and joined the NLC Secretariat in 2009.

Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, seen as one of Labour’s finest, was a delegate to the 2005 President Obasanjo’s Political Reforms and Constitutional Conference as well as one of Labour’s delegates to the 2014 President Jonathan Constitutional Conference.

A well travelled unionist, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja is always visibly active on the negotiations table and on the picket line and barricades.

A meeting of the National Executive Council NEC of the NLC is presently on-going in Kano with the ratification of the appointment on the agenda.
