Head coach of the female national wrestling team, Purity Akuh, says he is confident Nigeria will win all available six gold medals in the female weight category at the forthcoming African Games in Morocco.
In a chat with sports journalist, the veteran coach revealed that in the female category athletes will compete in six Olympic weight classes.
“We have six categories in the African Games, and I can tell you we are going to get the six gold medals.”
With the reputation of the girls, Akuh, insists that arch rivals Egypt has will not be able to rival their success at the Games.
“For the female side, Nigeria is leading the whole of Africa and I know that the ladies are going to retain their overall medal haul.
“In the freestyle, we are going to tackle the Egyptians.”
The team are in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, preparing ahead of the Games and Akuh revealed that the training has been going on well.
“The preparation has been good so far, we have been in camp and some of our athletes have been travelling for international competitions so hopefully we will be in Morocco to win lots of medals for Nigeria.”
At the last African Games in Congo, Nigeria finished second behind Egypt on the overall wrestling event table but in the female category, the Nigerian wrestlers reigned supreme winning five gold medals in the eight available weight categories, a feat which Akuh insists will continue.
The Games will hold in Rabat, Morocco from August 19 to 30.
