Nigerian Army engages Social Media Influencers on peace, security

The Nigeria Army has called on social Media Practitioners and online journalists to help disseminate relevant information concerning their activities to the general public to ensure peaceful atmosphere across the country.

Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Major General Usman Muhammad, made the call at the opening ceremony of the 8th Edition Seminar on Civil Military Relations organised in collaboration with Security Affairs Limited in Sokoto.

General Muhammad said that the seminar which started in 2018 at Port Harcourt was the Nigerian Army’s way of interacting with the civil populace to foster a harmonious and cordial Civil-Military Relationship.

According to him, it will enable the Nigerian Army receive feed-backs on how to serve the Nigerian populace better.

“There is no doubt that this forum will again provide us the necessary and needed opportunity to freely interact, discuss, share ideas and rub minds particularly towards the eradication of the fake news syndrome.”

He added that the role of social media cannot be over emphasised especially in promoting peace and security.

“We also acknowledge the fact that you all have very important roles to play in the development of Peace and Security in this country. It is very obvious that what you say, the way you say it and how its spreads have far reaching implications than most of us are aware of because the social media has a very crucial role to play in support of the Nigerian Army’s non-kinetic line of operations.

“The Nigerian Army believes in touching the lives of the average citizens for the better in addition to its constitutional roles and as part of the Nigerian Army’s cooperate social responsibilities. For instance, in the area of community outreaches through Quick Impact Projects, the Nigerian Army in last 5 years have carried out more than 100 Civil Military Related Projects all aimed at bridging the gap with the civil populace and ensuring the Nigerian Army is seen in a positive light,” he said.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to Sokoto State Governor on Special Projects, Mr Dahiru Yusuf, commended the organisers of the seminar, describing it as timely development.

Mr Yusuf said the interaction will explain the achievement of the Nigeria Army and solicit for the support of the practitioners in promoting peace and security in the country.

According to him, the State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has renew commitments to partner with Nigeria Army to provide adequate security in the State and country at large.

The theme of the Seminar is: “Civil Military Relations: The Evolving Role of the Social Media in Support of the Nigerian Army’s -Non-Kinetic line of Operations.”
