Nigerian Government has commenced free train ride on Lagos-Ibadan standard guage rail line.
This followed the test-run of the section of the 157-kilometer project from Iju in Lagos to Ibadan where the standard gauge rail line terminates.
Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi who flagged off the train service from Lagos to Ibadan said the free ride would last till March 2020.
Amaechi explained that the free train ride would commence from Iju to Ibaban by 2nd to 19th December, 2019 while from Agege to Ibadan would start from 21st.
According to him, you know we promised Nigerians in the last inspection that we would be commencing free train ride by November, 30th, which we have started from today and it will start from Iju to Ibadan and the train will run one trip going and coming till 19th December while from 21st it will run twice daily.
Amaechi noted that at the end of the free ride, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) would commence commercial operation on the fast train while the construction work continues.
He stated that the Contractor handling the project, China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC), had since completed track laying from Iju to Ibadan end of the project. It has now further extended track laying inwards Lagos to Iju as it approaches Ibadan.
He said, “Our free rides on the Lagos-Ibadan standard guage rail line will begin today (Saturday) and run through March, 2020. Commuters on that route can take advantage of it and save on transportation during the festive season & beyond. Let’s ride to the next level.”
