President Muhammadu Buahri has urged traditional rulers in the Niger-Delta Area to admonish the youth in the area against pipeline vandalism or acts capable of bridging the peace being enjoyed in the region.

He made the call on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he played hosted to the Urhobo Traditional Rulers and the Urhobo Progressive Union on a courtesy visit.

President Buhari said “I appeal to you as leaders of the your constituencies, sitting on Nigeria’s riches and resources that have been sustaining the country all these years, to keep on restraining your subjects to please think more of being Nigerians than any particular part of Nigeria. This is necessary so that the resources that God placed under you can be fully explored and utilised for the good of the whole country.”

Responding to the demands made by the delegation, which included the call on him to appoint a Minister form the Urhobo extraction, settling of boundary issues between the Urhobos and some communities in Edo State, President Buhari said “the constitution provides for the appointment of one Minister from each State of the federation and boundary issues are also constitutional. So both issues had to be limited to the constitution.”

On calls in some quarters for the restructuring of the country, which was re-echoed by the delegation from Delta State, the President said most of the people making such calls are doing so for selfish reasons.

“You mentioned something which has been topical these days, the question of restructuring Nigeria. Every person or group asking for restructuring have got their own agenda and I hope it can be accommodated by the constitution which we are running on,” he said.

Speaking earlier, President, Urhobo Peoples Union, Olorogun Tiaga praised the effort of the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari, towards fighting corruption and ensuring peace in all parts of the country.

“We acknowledge the giant strides of the Buhari administration in a space of three years across almost every sector of our national life. There have been key improvement in our way of doing things, due to the bold approach of our President to governance; form the fight against corruption, to infrastructural development, to the massive improvement in agriculture, investment in human capital development and the creation of social safety nets for the vulnerable among us,” he said.

The delegation was led to the State House by Dr Ogbon Ogoni-Oghoro, the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom.
