Nigeria’s governing party jettisons zoning

By Eme Offiong, Calabar

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged Nigerians to elect political office seekers based on merit rather than zoning.

The National leader of APC, Bola Tinubu made the assertion in Calabar, the Cross River State capital where a party member, Emmanuel Robson declared his interest to run for governorship seat in 2019 election.

Tinubu said; “our target is to take over the government of Cross River State. The era of choice of candidate should not narrow us down. Let nobody say a candidate should come from any zone. That arrangement was made by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP. This is APC and we are rooting for the best.”

The APC national leader noted that the adopted zoning practice was responsible for the current socio-economic decline in Cross River.

The first Head of Service in the then South Eastern State, Wilfred Inah represented the national leader at the event.

Rebirth Mission
The APC gubernatorial aspirant, Robson said “I have come to give Cross River a rebirth not by words but by action.”

The aspirant, who recently awarded grants to youths for small businesses stated;“the time has come for us to stand up and claim what is ours. It is time to tell this incompetent government of Ayade that it has inflicted the worse poverty ever on the people of Cross River State. We have arrived at a moment to say enough is enough.”

The aspirant expressed disappointment that despite the huge funds released by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari from the Paris club refund to pay outstanding salaries, gratuity and pensions, the State Governor Ben Ayade did nothing to rehabilitate dilapidated infrastructures, describing such as treason.

Robson pledged to work with the people to reposition the State; conduct local government elections to enhance grassroots development, revamping the civil service as well as the economy.

He urged the people to support his rebirth mission in Cross River.

APC’s Best
Similarly, the State Chairman of APC, Dr. Mathew Achigbe said the party was committed to present the best candidate for the 2019 elections irrespective of the senatorial district.

“Through a process where every member of the party will participate in choosing the governorship candidate, APC will present the best for Cross River,” Achigbe stated.

The State Secretary, Victor Ebong and Senator Bassey Otu urged others to take advantage of the level playing field provided by the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole to aspire for elective offices and win Cross River for APC.
