It is the 28th edition of the annual CAF Awards and the Awards Gala will take place in the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada. It is the first time since 2010 that the event will be taking place in the North African country.
Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala, aims to win the African Women’s Player of the Year crown for the fourth time but faces challenge from South African Thembi Kgatlana and Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout Njoya.
The Barcelona forward was crowned the best footballer in 2014, 2016 and 2017 before losing out to Thembi Kgatlana in 2018, who could prove to a stumbling block for her again as she hopes to equal the record of her mentor and compatriot, Perpetua Nkwocha, who was decorated four times in 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011.
Since 2014, Oshoala has never missed out on the top three in the running for the Women’s Player of the Year award and her prowess in 2019 has seen her achieve the feat once again.

Her successful Spanish side, FC Barcelona, in 2019 made her the favourite for this year award.
Oshoala was an instant hit from the moment she joined Barca, where she also featured for them in their 2018/19 UEFA Women’s Champions League, scoring in the 4-1 loss to French side, Olympique Lyonnais, in the final.
Her excellent performances for the club where scored eight goals, earned her an extended stay in the Spanish city with a contract that runs until 2022.
Oshoala was also an integral part of the Nigerian team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France where the Super Falcons reached the knockout stages. She scored the second goal in the 2-0 victory over South Korea in the group stages, a victory that saw Nigeria through to the Round of 16 for the first time in 20 years before being eliminated by Germany following a 3-0 defeat.
However, she was unable to help the team in the African qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where they were eliminated in the third round after losing to Ivory Coast on the away goals rule despite scoring in that encounter.
She also netted in the 1-0 victory against Algeria in the second round.
