Osun begins full payment of workers salaries

Yinka Salaam, Osogbo

The Osun State government has commenced the full payment of salaries to all categories of workers, months after economic meltdown forced it to embark on modulated salaries.

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress Osun State chapter, Mr Jacob Adekomi said this in an interview in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He said local government workers and primary school teachers had started receiving payment alerts from banks, saying he also received an alert of full salary for the month of July.

“The State government has started paying us full salaries. But we are waiting for the payment of arrears of the balance of modulated salaries. We have already given them a 21-day ultimatum and we hope they will pay the arrears before the expiration of the ultimatum.

“Negotiation will soon commence and we are waiting for them to start paying us the arrears. But I can confirm that they have started paying us full salaries and I received the alert yesterday,” Mr Adekomi said.

Government response
When contacted, the Head of Service, Dr Oyebade Olowogboyega assured workers that, payment of full salaries and arrears is a work in progress and that, as a responsible government, all promises would be fulfilled.

Olowogboyega commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the recent double promotions of the workers without examinations as well as the employment of thousands of youths into the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme programme.

He said the arrears and leave bonuses would equally be paid, saying, rather than the former level, the new promotion status of each worker would be reflected while the financial benefits attached to the promotion status would similarly be fulfilled.

He also lauded the State Governor for the on-going conversion of workers from one cadre, adding that the refurbishment of office equipment and necessary items for effective service delivery would be done soon.
