Osun State Governor in Southwest Nigeria has approved the release of N1 billion for the payment of contributory pension to retired civil servants in the state.
The Head of Service, Dr Festus Oyebade said this in Osogbo, the state capital at a meeting of the Forum of Head of Service/Permanent Secretaries, Coordinating Directors, Director-General, General Managers and Executive Secretaries.
Oyebade said Governor Rauf Aregbesola has also ordered the release of additional N200 million for the payment of gratuities to the pensioners.
The Head of Service reiterated government’s commitment to the welfare of the retired and serving public servants which informed the approval of the funds.
He however noted that the state resources must be further enhanced to enable government carry out its constitutional duties, just as he urged all stakeholders to cooperate to improve the internally generated revenue for the benefit of all.
Oyebade commended Governor Aregbesola for the gesture and expressed optimism that more funds would be released to take care of the backlog of pension and gratuities of the retired civil servants.
Voice of Nigeria recalls that the Governor had in December 2017 pledged to offset the substantial part of the backlog of salaries and pensions of workers in the first quarter of 2018.
More releases are still being expected soon to defray salaries of senior civil servants in the state before the end of April.
