The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has advised broadcasters to abide by the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and Guidelines on Political Broadcasts while reporting political activities
The Director-General of the commission, Malam Is’haq Modibbo kawu, gave the advice on Wednesday at the sensitisation workshop on political broadcasts held in Osogbo, Osun.
Kawu stated that the Nigerian broadcasters had responsibilities to work strictly according to the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
He said that that NBC would hold broadcasters responsible for their actions where they fail to uphold their responsibility.
He stressed the need for broadcasters to operate in a professional manner to avoid willful violations of ‘The Code’, by broadcasters.
“When we walk the straight and narrow path of adherence to our Code, we would assist the process of democracy consolidation in our country.
“ As you’re all aware, in a few weeks from now, the people of this state will be going to the polls to elect a new governor and other representatives.
“ It is the tradition of the NBC to organise sensitisation workshops wherever an election is to be held in Nigeria.
“ Broadcasters have basic responsibilities to our country, as defined by the terms of their licensing, as well as the Nigeria Broadcasting Code and the Guidelines on Political Broadcasts,“ he explained.
The D-G expressed optimism that the sensitisation workshop would strengthen broadcasters in the state to perform their duties in a more professional manner.
He advised broadcasters to be exemplary in conduct, so that the coming elections in Osun would be as exemplary as the state has often been.
The director-general also implored licensees, the Broadcast outfits in Osun to rise above personal biases to perform professionally.
According to him, broadcast outfits should not become the biased mouthpieces of political parties and politicians.
“NBC will continue to regulate fairly and firmly to ensure that all manners of broadcasts, including political broadcasts, are conducted according to the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
“ I want us to resolve collectively to make the upcoming Osun state elections a success for our dear country, “Kawu said.
