Former D’Tigers captain, Olumide Oyedeji, says he is 250 per cent certain D’Tigress will qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The 2019 Women Afrobasket champions will face the United States of America, Serbia and Mozambique in the 2020 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade from February 6 to 9, 2020.
The top three teams in the group will book an automatic ticket for the summer Games in Tokyo. D’Tigress will open their account at the qualifying tournament against their African counterpart Mozambique at the Aleksandar Nikolić Hall, Belgrade.
The former Orlando Magic player believes the girls will pick the ticket.
“I am confident the girls will qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo. They are well motivated and after their feat at the World Cup in Spain in 2018 and their Afrobasket victory in in 2019, they finally have the credentials to book a ticket.
“Three countries out of four in the group will book a ticket to the Games and the only country I see beating us is the United States. To me I see them as the best basketball playing nation in the world. We can beat Serbia if we are not over confident and Mozambique will most likely be a stroll.”
Oyedeji says the team could easily book their passage to the games before facing the US.
“Our first game is against Mozambique, then Serbia. If we play our cards well, we would have booked our ticket before facing Olympics champions USA,”he said.
