Pillars consolidate, Rivers united held, Heartland stunned

It was a mixed bag of results on match day 11 of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) matches played across Nigeria.

Junior Lokosa once again showed why he is the top-ranked goal poacher in the NPFL as his 85th minute strike sealed a 2-0 win for Kano Pillars against  league newcomers Go-Round of Omoku at the Sani Abacha stadium.

Pillars had taken the lead thanks to a 58th minute penalty scored by Alassan Ibrahim, to rise to the top of the league with 20 points.

For Go-Round, it has been a baptism of fire from day one, and they must now work on improving their away form, if they are not to make a swift return to division one.

Indeed it was not a sweet weekend for teams from Rivers state, as Rivers United threw away the chance to consolidate on last week’s away win in Ilorin; an 85th minute strike by Oche Salefu helped FC Ifeanyi Ubah run away with a point.

His goal cancelled out Onyekachi Chidume’s 66th minute penalty and the match ended 1-1 a piece.

The Port-Harcourt side now lie in 5th position, while the Nnewi billionaires occupy the 11th place.

Owerri fans left the Dan Anyam stadium stunned, as visiting Lobi Stars of Makurdi secured a 1-0 win over home side Heartland FC, thereby continuing their good fortunes on the road this season.

Samad Kadiri’s 25th minute goal was the difference, despite efforts from the home side to come back into the game.

Lobi Stars set a minimum target of a continental appearance in 2019, and results like this have put that plan on course.

they now occupy the number two position
