Poland 2019: African clash, Asian showdown signpost Round-two

The 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland has entered the knock-out stage.

Eight matches will be played, but two in particular have a rich regional flavour.

Nigeria will face a strong Senegal side yet to concede a goal, while Asian rivals Japan and South Korea are set for a massive showdown.

ECOWAS tango

Senegal dominated Group A with command performances against Tahiti and Colombia. Their last match ended goalless.

They will fancy their chances against a not-too-impressive Nigeria – who started with so much promise but just managed to sneak into round-two.

However, the Flying Eagles are expected to fight for national pride and deal a decisive blow to the Senegalese lions.

No mercy

Japan, the 1999 runners-up will face a hugely impressive South Korea – who are bent on showing their exploits against Argentina in their last group match was no fluke. Japan on their part remain unbeaten and have grown steadily in the tournament.

It promises to be a feisty, high-paced encounter.

European contest

Hosts Poland will hope to rely on home support against Italy.

It’s a tall order, but anything is possible at this stage.
