The Kebbi State Government has commended the efforts of Nigeria’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for its support on poverty alleviation in the country.

Governor Atiku Bagudu gave the commendation when he paid a working visit to the Minister, Sadiya Umar Farouq, in her office, in Abuja.

According to him, the visit was also to share experiences: “Inspite of the COVID-19 challenge, she’s been all over the country, promoting programmes that are helping to include everyone and to also share experiences that we have learnt over the years”. Governor Bagudu said.

He also noted that part of the visit was to intimate her on the outcome of the meetings of the National Food Security Council and the Anchor Borrowers Programme.

“I believe with the keenness, in which she’s handling the assignment, she will appreciate hearing from different perspectives especially experiences about including others”. He said

Speaking on the programmes from which the State has benefitted, Governor Bagudu said many States including Kebbi had received support from the ministry.

“Kebbi State is a big beneficiary of the National Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government that she’s now mandated to expand and calibrate. Many States have received support from the Ministry to support us in the Coronavirus pandemic. Cash Transfer is expanding and other programmes like N-power, N-agro which because of our experience, feel could be calibrated to help those who have benefitted to have a skill and trade when the programme ends.”  He added.

On her part, The Minister said State Governors were critical to achieving the mandate of the ministry especially in terms of interventions.

“Most of the interventions are taken to the States and you can’t go to the State without involving the State Governments. We have to engage with them especially when reaching out to the poorest of the poor because they are their own constituents”. Farouq said.

The Minister of humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development added that the Ministry in collaboration with the State Governments will improve on the existing programmes for maximum impact.
