President Muhammadu Buhari says he will consult wider and subsequently address the nation on whether he will re-contest for President next year.
Chairman of the forum of Governors elected under the platform of the governing All Progressives Congress APC, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, revealed this to journalists after the Governors met behind closed doors with President Buhari on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“The President in his usual manner has requested that we give him time and that he will address the nation and the caucus of the party very soon. So we should be full of expectations that the President will make officially known to Nigerians his intentions but we hope that his response will be in line with what the Governors are thinking,” Okorocha said.
He, however, said the entire APC Governors want President Buhari to run again in 2019, in order to consolidate the good work he is doing for Nigeria.
“We discussed so many issues that affect the nation, our party and the President’s ambition to run for 2019 elections. It is the desire of the Governors that our President should run again for this exalted office, given his performance in the last two years. We believe that if he continues, Nigeria will be better for it,” he stated.
Also speaking to journalists, Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello said the Governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC have three reasons why they want President Muhammadu Buhari to re-contest in 2019.
“Three key points made us to urge the President to run and fly in 2019; one, security. He has done excellently well in improving the security situation in all parts of the country. Secondly, fight against corruption. Even we the Governors are competing among ourselves to ensure that we utilize the few resources available to us. So corruption is reduced to the barest minimum. Then you have the revival of the economy, job creation and making sure that average Nigerians are comfortable. Based on these things I have enumerated, we are urging the President to please run and fly in 2019,” Bello appealed.
Yahaya Bello said even the Governors themselves were careful not to engage in any corrupt practice, knowing how well the President frowns at it.
“If you look at it critically, the Governors themselves who have immunity are very careful because we know that the President is incorruptible. If you involve yourself in any corrupt practice, you know you are going to face the consequences so we are very careful about that and we are utilising resources at our disposal,” he said.
