The Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has assured residents of the territory that the dreaded COVID-19, popularly known as coronavirus has no place in the nation’s capital.
The Minister also said the administration is committed to all activities aimed at strengthening the awareness and prevention of Lassa fever and coronavirus and outbreaks in FCT.
Aliyu who gave this assurance during the flag-off of the NYSC FCT awareness and sensitization campaign on Lassa fever and coronavirus diseases and outbreaks in the Federal Capital Territory.
She also assured that the administration’s surveillance informants within the communities and health facilities sites have been strengthened with sensitization of health personnel across all levels of healthcare services provision.
The minister used the occasion to charge corps members who represent critical segment of the society to use their numerical strength to intensify information, education and communication activities on these diseases and their associated outbreaks.
“I want to reassure you that the FCT has no case of coronavirus disease while Lassa fever contacts have been tracked and placed on observation. The Administration is committed to all activities aimed at strengthening the awareness and prevention of Lassa fever and coronavirus diseases and outbreaks in FCT.
All our surveillance informants within the communities and health facilities sites have been strengthened with sensitization of health personnel across all levels of health care services provision,” she affirmed.
Aliyu further assured that working with partners, particularly National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and UN Agencies led by WHO, the administration has deepened the preparedness of the outbreak response center, provide personal protective equipment to health personnel and conduct dry run for emergency response and case handling on site in health facilities across the territory.
She, however, called on residents to promote good environmental and personal hygiene and discourage rodents from entering homes and having access to food stuff, stressing that the key preventive measures for Lassa fever and coronavirus infections is neighbor to neighbour information and sensitization visits to communities.
Earlier, the NYSC North Central Area Coordinator, Malam Abdullahi Yusuf Baba, called on corps members to intensify the awareness campaign against the possible outbreak of lassa fever and coronavirus not only in the FCT, but throughout the north central and the nation at large.
While thanking the FCT Administration for flagging off the awareness campaign, he expressed optimism that with the involvement of corps members, the message will be spread to all the nooks and crannies of the territory.
