Road transport workers back rail system in Nigeria

The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Union, Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin has debunked insinuations that the Union is causing setback for the rail transportation system.

According to him, members of the union were in support of the rail system, saying that if the rail system is functioning optimally, it would decongest the rate of heavy duty trucks plying the roads.

Alhaji Yasin during an interview with newsmen in Ilorin , explained that the Union would give maximum support to the Federal Government in the actualization of the rail transport system across the thirty six States of the federation.

The National President of the Union said the Union in the country had been incorporated into the world Transport Union Body, pointing out that the era of thuggery, hooliganism and crisis among members of the Union in Nigeria had been eradicated.

He described members of the Union as professionals who were responsible in all aspects, saying that the Union is in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and other transportation sector Unions.

On the relationship with the Independent National Electoral Commission, Alhaji Yasin attributed inadequate vehicles to carry the electoral materials and ad-hoc staff to the delay in the commencement of the last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The NURTW boss expressed concern that some Electoral Officers deliberately reduced the number of vehicles already booked from their members, a development he said he had already reported the the INEC chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu.

He, however, stressed the need for the electoral umpire to strengthen its partnership with the Union by requesting for more vehicles across the country to ensure earlier distribution of the election materials and adhoc staff to their various polling units.
