Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Senate President Bukola Saraki, of frustrating the government’s efforts in infrastructural developments.
The APC National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole made the accusation during a press briefing at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, on Friday.
Mr. Oshiomhole claimed that the handling of the 2018 National Budget at the Senate showed that the Senate president did not have the interest of the nation at heart.
“You do not have to be a political activist or a partisan politician to appreciate that in an election year every democratic government around the world will do everything possible to ensure that in an election year, it seen to be working for the people of the country.
“So the Federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians expected that it would do everything possible this year to make up for lost time in terms of budget implantation and addressing critical infrastructure.
“The Senate under Senator Saraki chose instead to delay the budget up to the end of the first half of the year to conduce with the period of the raining season such that those aspects of infrastructure such as roads for example cannot really be constructed during raining season.
“These were not errors of the head on the part of Senator Saraki’s leadership, they were clearly designed to frustrate the capacity of President Buhari’s leadership” Oshiomhole said.
He also accused Senator Saraki of sending the senate on its recession ahead of the normal scheduled time when they were important pending matters like passage of Supplementary Budget for the electoral commission, to enable it prepare for the 2019 General Election on time.
The APC National Chairman claimed that these actions indicated that the senate president doesn’t have the interest of Nigeria at heart.
Last week, Senator Saraki defected from the APC to the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
He said that the APC would take legal steps to impeach the Senate President Bukola Saraki and also defeat him in his state in the forthcoming 2019 General Election in the country.
“Saraki is not going to be the first senate president to be impeached and I doubt if he is going to be the last but definitely he will be impeached according to law and to democratic norms,” he concluded.
“The only way Saraki can avoid impeachment is for him to do what is honourable which again leads to the issue of character. We saw Senator Akpabio who was the PDP leader in the Senate, once he made up his mind to leave the PDP, even before announcing his defection, the first role is to inform the PDP as a man of honour is hereby resigned from this office. So, Senator Saraki has demonstrated neither character nor being a man of honour” Oshiomhole said.
The APC National Chairman further explained that they tried settle things with Senator Saraki but his griviances which according to him were about “values, ambition and fundamental covering between his own values as a person and the values of the All Progressives Congress were not negotiable”.
Mr. Oshiomhole also accused the Senate President of antiparty activities while he was a member of the APC.
“He proceeded to appoint opposition Senators to head strategic committees whose activities can affect either for good or for bad the workings of the government and the relationship between the government and the legislature”.
