Senate seeks action to strengthen airports security


Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN to ensure the usage of effective CCTV cameras and other security systems in airports across the country to avoid planting of illicit drugs and other illegal activities.

It also urged FAAN to acknowledge only accredited personnel on duty to be allowed in the restricted areas of the airports.

These were parts of the resolutions reached at Tuesday’s plenary, following a motion on the need to strengthen security at the various airports in Nigeria.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegben.

Also adopted was a resolution urging the FAAN to ensure that all personnel on duty are held accountable and punished after due investigation to serve as deterrent in case of an arrest of any Nigerian that pass through Nigerian airports, on allegations of drug trafficking.

Also, President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmed Lawan announced a 12-member Ad-hoc Committee on Legislative Agenda.

The committee, which was given two weeks to fashion out agenda for the 9th Senate, has former Kebbi State governor and senator representing Kebbi Central District, Muhammad Adamu Aliero, as chairman.

Other members include Senators Barau Jibrin, APC Kano North; Abdulfata Buhari, APC Oyo North; Olubunmi Adetunmbi, APC Ekiti North; Chimaroke Nnamani, PDP Enugu East and Uche Ekwunife, PDP Anambra Central.

Others are Sadiq Umar, APC Kwara North; Gershom Bassey, PDP Cross River South; Ifeanyi Uba, YPP, Anambra South; Haliru Dauda Jika, APC Bauchi South and Aishatu Dahiru, PDP Adamawa Central.
