Shippers Council seeks implementation of regional agreement

The Nigerian Shippers Council, NSC says development of lasting framework for implementation of International Convention and agreements, as well as regional agreement is essential to promote Trade and Transport in West and Central Africa.

The Executive Secretary /CEO of NSC, Bello Hassan stated this during the Sub-regional Sensitisation workshop themed:” status of Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention) in Union of African Shippers Councils UASC, member States in Abuja.

The convention which brings together economic development agencies is to protect the interest of the National economies of Member States.

Improve Service Delivery
Bello said the sub-region should give priority to measures that would improve service delivery at ports.

“In line with the above, the sub-region is expected to pay priority attention to measure that will make our ports more user friendly and attractive to international trade,” he said.

Domestic Legislation
The NSC Boss said for the objectives of convention to be effectively implemented, there was need for domestic legislation.

The Minister of Transportation Mr Rotimi Amaechi said government was ready to adopt and implement resolutions of the convention.

Amaechi added that this would help reduce the cost of doing business, promote efficiency and enhance competition in the country’s economy.
