Sokoto commences Islamic Banking system

The Sokoto state government has commenced Islamic banking system through its owned Giginya Microfinance Bank.

The State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, disclosed this while receiving a delegation of the national Islamic finance committee of Indonesia, KNKS, led by Mr Jameel Abbas who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House in Sokoto.

In a statement signed by Senior Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr Muhammad Bello, Governor Tambuwal thanked the delegation for their return visit pointing out that the Sokoto state government delegation visited Indonesia in July during which the state learned a lot from the county’s Islamic microfinance model.

He expressed optimism that when the model is entrench in the state it would go along way in alleviating porverty and empower more people in the State.

The Governor called on citizens to use the advantage and promote interest free economic activities across the twenty three local government area of the State.

The Head of the delegation from the National Islamic finance committee from Indonesia, Mr Jameel Abbas, said they were in the state to look into the possibility of implementing the Indonesia Islamic finance institutions established 25 years ago.

Mr Abbas explained that about 3 million Indonesians have benefited from the scheme within two decades of it’s operations.

He thanked the state government for the warm reception accorded them, while assuring him of their country’s full support to ensure success of the programme .
