The Sokoto state government says over N80 million had been earmarked for tree planting across the state.
Malam Muhammad Maidoki, the state Zakkat and Endowment Commission Chairman, made the disclosure during the inauguration of the economic tree plantation at Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo, Sokoto.
The tree planting was part of the commission’s activities to honour the visiting Dr Hany El-Banna, the Co-founder Islamic Relief Worldwide, to Sokoto state.
“As a government we are always committed to actualise our desire goal of raising the quality of living among our society and protect our environment as well as improve the state economic system.
“Today, we are making another history of planting economic trees within our environment to honour our August visitor.
“The state government has in its 2019 budget earmarked over N80 million to aid the state Zakkat Commission in achieving the plantation to encourage economic development and improve the living standard of the people,” he said.
Dr. El-Banna commended the state Zakkat Commission and the Sokoto state government for honouring him and assured government of support in achieving the desire goal of the commission.
He called on the students to emulate the gesture of planting trees, saying that the act has a lot of reward from Allah.
Also speaking, the Chairman Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), Dr Mukhtar Aminu-Kano, lauded the commission for the initiative.
He said that the importance of tree planting could never be over emphasised.
In their separate remarks the state Commissioners for Finance and Science and Technology, Alhaji Abdussamad Dasuki and Hajiya Kulu Abubakar respectively restated the state government readiness to encourage tree planting.
