Strategic communication essential to information management – Omeri

The need to cultivate citizens’ involvement in the pre-active, active and post active stages in information management of any organization form the essentials of strategic communication. 

A former Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr. Mike Omeri made the statement while delivering a paper titled, The Imperatives of Effective Strategic Communication for Military Operations: “Operation Lafiya Dole in perspective”. 

The media practitioner stressed that strategic communication should be driven by similar objectives in the fight against terrorism. 

“Strategy is a process and situational assessment of issues with the aim of identifying certain goals and targets or communication deliberately planed, exchange of information, data, and findings which are done through a medium strategic communication. It is usually communicated to elicit support or sympathy, and this can be in a form of propaganda,” said Omeri. 

He identified situational components of strategic communication to include, situational knowledge, communication skills, goal setting, anxiety management, good strategic plan, workshops to identify sources of information, knowing your environment and people, determining the level of competency in a language, designing appropriate counter-narrative among others.

Omeri urged the army and other security agencies to gain the confidence of the people and allay fears of the general public by deploying information management strategies.
