FC Midtjylland of Denmark forward Paul Onuachu was one of the surprise name in the list of players released by coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles upcoming games against Seychelles and Egypt.
The 24 year old was listed in the forward department alongside the duo of Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo ahead of Mouscron forward Taiwo Awoniyi.
Awoniyi has been scoring goals for fun since his move to Mouscron in January with the on loan Liverpool forward scoring six times in the seven games he has played so far for the modest Belgium side.
However, Rohr opt for Onuachu who has also scored 14 goals in 21 league games due to the fact that the lanky striker has been consistent for a period of two years in Denmark for Midtjylland.
Rohr scouted him extensively and decided to call him up ahead of Awoniyi base on his consistency the past two years and also the fact that he will bring a physical present and aerial threat. Something the current forwards in the Super Eagles lack.
Onuachu who stand at an impressive height of a little over 2 metres tall will provide the physical edge that made Rohr included Simy Nwankwo in the Eagles squad for the World Cup in Russia but he will be hoping he bring something extra to the team unlike Simy.
Mikel has been in fine form for Middlesbrough since his move to the team in January and many expected him to be in the squad of the Super Eagles for the first team since after the World Cup, that was however not the case.
Rohr omitted Mikel after struggling to get across to him to confirm his availability for the game Mikel is yet to fully settle in his new club according to sources close to the former Chelsea midfield ace, hence his decision to opt against a spot in the squad.
Mikel Agu is a bit unfortunate as his exclusion has to do with an injury he picked up during a game for his loan side Vitoria Setubal while Bryan Idowu was excluded on the grounds of limited playing time at Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow this season.
The omission of Kelechi Iheanacho has a lot to do with his poor form for Leicester City this season particularly his inability to nail a permanent spot in the starting line up and even when he is introduced as a substitute he hardly impresses.
