The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation has said it is saddened by the sudden death of Italy-based player Seun Ajetunmobi, who died on Friday.
In a statement on Friday, the Secretary-General of the federation Anthony Idaye said the NTTF was pained by the loss of the player, who died at a hospital in Lagos, where he was being treated following a domestic accident, which occurred in his home in Lagos on May 23.
Idaye said the federation was shocked by the news of the death of the 33-year-old, who on May 9 was crowned the men’s singles champion at the Aso Table Tennis Championships in Abuja.
He said, “On behalf of the president, the executive board members and the entire table tennis family in Nigeria, I regret to announce the sudden death of one of our national team players Seun Ajetunmobi, which sad event occurred early morning of June 1, 2018, in a Lagos hospital.
The Italy-based athlete was on holiday in Nigeria after the end of the season in Italy. The federation sympathises with the player’s family and his supporters. The burial will be announced later by his family.
He was one of the country’s finest players and a role model to the junior players. The federation and country has lost a star in the sport.”
