US Open :Nick Kyrgios battles into second round

In a match with occasional fireworks and the ever-present capacity to explode,Nick Kyrgios managed to beat both himself and his American opponent Steve Johnson to advance past the US Open first round.

Playing his first match since an ugly on-court meltdown at the Cincinnati Masters, where the Australian copped a $US113,000 ($167,000) fine – one of the biggest penalties in tennis history – Kyrgios took to challenging his entourage several times in an attempt to maintain his motivation levels in a match that began after 11pm local time.

But, by the end of the night and with only a modest crowd left at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Kyrgios had a straight sets victory, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) , 6-4 , under his belt and a second round appointment with Frenchman Antoine Hoang.

The 28th-seeded Australian also only emerged from the two-hour win with one code violation.
