Voting commences for Sokoto supplementary elections

Voting for the Sokoto Governorship supplementary elections in 135 polling units have commenced across the twenty two local government areas in the state.

As early as 8:01 am, accreditation has commenced at Hakimi 004 unit of Rijiya ‘A’ ward in Sokoto South local government area and other areas of the State.  The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC officials arrived early and had already begun the exercise.

There were presences of heavy security personnel deployed to control and ensure peaceful atmosphere during the process.

There was recorded pocket of violence caused by vote buying at Hakimi 004 in Rijiya ‘A’ ward polling unit.

While responding to the issue of vote buying, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Aisha Madawaki Isah, said election was going smoothly, but was disrupted after some few minutes when some suspected vote buyers came and wanted to destroy the process.

Professor Madawaki added that she expects the security agencies to control the situation.

Meanwhile the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Danjuma Garba, and his security team drawn from different security agencies arrived to ensure peace was restored and the process went fairly.

Mr Garba disclosed that the problem was just a misunderstanding between the party agents and would soon be resolved.

The Police Commissioner urged the electorate to cooperate with INEC and security agencies to help and provide adequate security during and after the exercise.
