The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed says for Nigerian universities to be ranked among the top best in the world, priority must be given to key principles of global best practices.
Professor Rasheed said this in Abuja during an interactive session with journalists.
He warned that Nigerian universities are dangerously drifting to over localising the Institutions.
According to him, “Nigerian universities will only be ranked among the top best in Africa and the world if the universities stop negating key principles of Global standard guiding universities.”
Internalisation of University Education
The Executive Secretary expressed concern over internalisation of university education in Nigeria ,saying the demographics of the nation’s universities revealed preponderance of over localisation and over indiginisation of universities.
Professor Rasheed called on the universities to promote inter-cultural system of university.
According to him, “Nigeria universities must be prepared to embrace the world to be universal, universities must endeavour to recruit students from every State of the country as well as every local government, to reflect the Universal nature of a university.”
Catchment Area System
He emphasised that the Nigerian government has not abolish catchment area system of admitting students to university but rather insisting that all universities must be able to attract students from all States of the country.
“The Nigerian government is concerned that in this era of demographic, localisation of our universities will not help reposition our system ,a national spread of staff and students population is key.
“All universities have their catchment areas which usually is between 10-13 States, rather the way we are going, we will be missing out on so many things,” he explained.
