The Nigeria Wrestling Federation on Sunday named six men and six women wrestlers for next month’s Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
The women wrestlers are Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Odunayo Adekuoroye, eight-time African champion Blessing Oborududu, Blessing Onyebuchi, Aminat Adeniyi, Mercy Genesis and Bose Samuel.
The men fighters are 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sinivie Boltic, six-time African champion Daniel Amas, African champion Melvin Bibo, Welson Ebikewenimo, Soso Tamarau, and Amos Assizecourt.
John Emmanuel, who is ranked number one in the world in the men’s 70kg freestyle, was surprisingly omitted from the list.
But the federation Daniel Igali said the two-time African champion was not included because his category is a non-Commonwealth Games weight class in the sport.
Adekuoroye will compete in the 57kg while Oborududu will fight in the 68kg. Onyebuchi is to compete in 76kg. Adeniyi will fight in the 58kg, Genesis in the 50kg and Samuel in the 53kg.
Thirty five year old Boltic will compete in the 125kg with Amas fighting in the 65kg. Bibo will compete in the 86kg and Ebikewenimo in the 57kg. Tamarau will take part in the 97kg and Assizecourt in the 74kg.
None of the Greco-roman wrestlers made the list.
Igali said the country’s areas of strength were considered for the Games, adding that the Greco-roman is not included in the Commonwealth Games.
