The Nigerian Government has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following rising concerns over protests targeting foreign nationals in the country.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the South African envoy has been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting is intended to address recent developments that could strain the long-standing diplomatic relations between both nations.
The Ministry expressed deep concern over ongoing demonstrations in parts of South Africa, particularly reports of harassment and attacks against Nigerian citizens and their businesses.
These incidents, it noted, “have heightened tensions and sparked growing unease among Nigerians both at home and abroad.”
During the meeting, Nigerian officials are expected to formally communicate the government’s position and seek assurances regarding the safety and protection of its nationals residing in South Africa.
While acknowledging the increasing public outrage, the Ministry urged Nigerians ‘to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate the situation.’
It reaffirmed the Nigerian Government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerians living overseas.
